SCR catalytic converters perform the selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from exhaust gases with the help of a reducing agent urea (Adblue) which when released into the air becomes Ammonia (NH3).

1.Reduction Reaction of NOx with NH3 in SCR Catalytic Converter

For NO:

4NO + 4NH3 + O2 → 4N2 + 6H2O

For NO2:

6NO2 + 8NH3 → 7N2 + 12H2O

For mixtures of NO and NO2 (common in diesel exhaust):

NO + NO2 + 2NH3 → 2N2 + 3H2O
